Are the days of sleeping like a baby gone forever?

UUGGGG! This waking up during the night thing!

Okay, depending on your age, you know exactly what I mean. Awake at 2:43 in the am knowing you have a big day ahead of you. You want so desperately to fall back to sleep.

Most of us 40 and up know what I’m talking about. I’m not sure at what age it starts but this waking up 2, 3, 4 times or more during the night sucks, big time!

I don’t even know where to start. I’m blogging this because this is one of the things, I truly wish someone would have told me, so I could prepare myself. When it first starts to happen, you think I’m just waking up I can go back to sleep and most times you do but most times you can’t.

Usually something is on our minds, we could be under stress or sick. It could be several things but when it starts to happen more and more, night after night, that’s when it becomes a problem and it start to affect your health.

Now this is the problem, we all need sleep, some more than others. We still need to sleep to be healthy, happy functioning people. Lack of sleep affects everything we do. Most of us don’t have the time or pleasure to be able to nap later in the day if we wake up during the night. So, we need to figure out what can help us stay asleep.

Some things that I have tried are Tart Cherry Juice, sleeping pills (over the counter), Lavender oil, praying, something called “The 3-step breathing method”, exercise (including lifting weights), and my favorite, listening to rain and thunder sounds on YouTube (very soothing).

In this post, I’m going to talk about the 3-step breathing method called the 4-7-8 breathing technique. This is how you do it. As you are lying in bed, inhale through your nose as you count 1, 2, 3, 4 now hold your breath and count to 7, then exhale (blow out softly), through your mouth as you count to 8. Do these steps 4 or 5 times in a row, or more if you like. I usually do it 4 times in a row.

Now you won’t instantly fall asleep, but it does help you to relax. When I would do this, I did not realize how tensed up I was. When you exhale and count to 8 you will feel your body start to relax as you blow out.

I have tried this breathing method and it does work about 75% of the time, which to me is good. It really does help me fall back to sleep. What it does is help me to relax and my concentration is on the breathing and counting. So, it takes your mind off what you may be worrying about and help you relax and fall back to sleep.

This is the method I learned from watching Dr. Weil on PBS, that’s the Public Broadcasting Station, you know the station that have Big Bird, Burt and Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, Sesame Street.

Try some of the other methods too. I will write some posts about them later. Also, Pinterest has a lot of ideas too. I’m hoping one of these methods can help you get the rest you need.

If these techniques work for you please let me know by leaving me a comment.
